Local 4-H Students Visit Our Logansport Shop
The Wiers International Trucks location in Logansport recently opened its doors to a group of enthusiastic 4-H students for a behind-the-scenes tour and Q&A session. This visit wasn’t just about showing off our facility, climbing on trucks, and eating donuts. It was about sparking interest in the next generation of diesel technicians… but the donuts didn’t hurt!
Why This Matters: The Diesel Tech Shortage
Our industry faces a critical challenge. According to recent data, about 25,600 openings for diesel technicians are projected each year over the next decade, primarily due to retirements and workforce transitions. The current technician population is aging rapidly, with nearly 50% of diesel technicians having more than 20 years of experience.
The numbers tell a compelling story:
- The average age of diesel technicians is 42 years old
- Baby boomers, who make up 40-50% of current technicians, are retiring over the next few years
- Technical schools are only producing around 3,500 new diesel technicians annually
- Each unfilled technician position costs businesses up to $300,000 per year in lost revenue
This gap creates both a challenge and an opportunity for young people looking for rewarding, stable careers with growth potential.
4-H Students Get Hands-On Experience
During their visit to our Logansport facility, the 4-H students got to experience what makes diesel technology such an exciting field. Our Team Wiers technicians demonstrated diagnostic procedures using our advanced equipment and showed how modern trucks integrate complex electronic systems with traditional mechanical components.
Our senior technicians shared their journeys, emphasizing that successful careers don’t always require a four-year degree—just passion, dedication, and the right training.
Building Community Connections
At Wiers, we believe community involvement is essential to our mission of making #TRUCKSROLL. By connecting with organizations like 4-H, we’re investing in the future of both our industry and our communities.
4-H’s focus on developing citizenship, leadership, and life skills through hands-on learning aligns perfectly with our approach to technician development. These young people are already developing the problem-solving abilities and work ethic that make them great technicians.
