Two years ago the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) pushed out the ELD Mandate which referred to rules surrounding electronic logging devices and now the deadline to get into compliance is here.

Background of the ELD Mandate – The ELD Mandate stems from a bill passed in 2012 called the “Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century” bill, also known as MAP-21. Included in this bill was a provision requiring the FMCSA to develop a rule mandating the use of electronic logging devices (ELDs). The details were not released until December, 2015.

What the ELD Mandate Requires – The requirement entails using an electronic logging device (ELD) to keep an electronic record a driver’s activity. The FMCSA refers to this as the Record of Duty Status (RODS), which replaces the paper logbook some drivers currently use to record their compliance with Hours of Service (HOS) requirements.

What You Should Note About Compliance Deadlines – The deadline for trucking companies that are affected were given until December 2017 to comply, although fleets already equipped with electronic logging technology will have until December 2019 to ensure compliance with the published specifications.
